🌏 For International Visitors#

Welcome to the Hudas Tahai Project. This project carries forward the cultural legacy of Bunun elder Hudas Tahai and his decades of work preserving Bunun language, stories, history, and cultural knowledge in Taiwan.

An English introduction to the project is available below. Please scroll down to read our story in English.

English|The Hudas Tahai Project

Passing the Cultural Relay Baton to the Next Generation#

The Story Began in a Classroom#

When I was a child, an elder came to our classroom every Friday.

He taught us the Bunun language and shared stories of the Bunun people. At the time, I knew him simply as Hudas Tahai, the elder who came to teach us our language. I did not yet know that, beyond our classroom, he had already devoted many years of his life to preserving and passing on Bunun culture.

I was born in Yanping Township, Taitung County, and grew up in the Wuling community. Many years later, through my father, I reconnected with Hudas Tahai. In 2016, I began visiting him, listening to his stories, and documenting his life and cultural work.

Only then did I begin to understand what the elder I remembered from childhood had been doing for so many years. He had listened to other elders, collected stories about Bunun history and migration, preserved cultural knowledge, and passed what he had learned to younger generations through teaching, writing, and creative work.

Hudas Tahai once described cultural transmission as a “relay baton”—something passed from one generation to the next.

Years later, I came to realize that the child who once sat in his classroom listening to his stories had also, without knowing it, received that baton.

The Hudas Tahai Project began with that baton.

What We Have Carried Forward#

Since 2016, the Hudas Tahai Project has grown from documenting one elder’s life and cultural work into a continuing effort to preserve, share, and pass on Bunun cultural knowledge.

Over the years, this work has taken many forms, including academic research and publications, books and illustrated stories, exhibitions of Hudas Tahai’s woodcarvings, cultural education for children and university students, community activities, and projects connecting cultural heritage with the well-being and care of Indigenous elders.

These different activities share the same purpose: to ensure that cultural knowledge does not remain only in records or memories, but continues to be seen, learned, used, and passed on.

Today, the project continues to explore new ways of carrying the baton forward—from publications and educational materials to cultural activities, storytelling, and interactive learning.

Carrying the Baton into the Future#

Hudas Tahai has passed away, but the work of cultural transmission continues.

For us, cultural transmission is not complete when a book is published, an exhibition ends, or a research project is finished. The language, stories, and cultural knowledge that have been preserved must continue to reach new people and future generations.

Our next steps include developing a book on cultural transmission, creating an interactive Bunun cultural board game, and continuing to adapt and share Bunun traditional stories in ways that younger generations can engage with.

Each book, game, story, and educational activity is another way of passing the cultural baton forward.

How You Can Support the Project#

Your support helps us continue the practical work behind cultural transmission—including cultural documentation, writing and publishing, educational materials, creative projects, and community-based cultural activities.

Every contribution, regardless of size, helps create another opportunity for Bunun language, stories, knowledge, and cultural memory to be seen, learned, and passed on.

For international supporters who do not require a physical reward, the digital thank-you option is available, so you can support the project without international shipping.

Hudas Tahai passed the baton to our generation. We are carrying it now, and we hope that one day, others will be ready to carry it forward.
