〈United We Can〉

UWC USA( 就學期間: 2021/9 ~ 2023/5)

English version!!#

Summary#

Hello everyone, I’m Amanda from Taiwan. I am 17 years old, and I have studied in Taitung before. My parents have been implanting an open mind and independent deliberation since I was little. They always use other "questions" instead of my required answers when I ask them. It did cultivate me as a curious personality and having a special ability to think and challenge everything by myself. When I was in middle school, I decided to break through from traditional education and started self-learning and research topics that I was interested in made me more enthusiastic and motivated to learn, and also got a lot of experience that was different from others accordingly. Moreover, I have learned some diverse courses and skills from an Experimental High School. In the class, Combined Studies, I learned that before being international, we need to explore Taiwan — the place where we live and create memories. We are close to the tribe, and use labor, music, and dance, to experience the spirit from the Indigenous people. We learned how to use our bodies to touch the world, and met different ethnic cultures. These kinds of experiences were internalized into the courage to make me discover the imperfections of society, and also tried to use actions to make changes, and all such experiences, learning, and training are just meet the education spirit and purpose of UWC. One day, I learn that the United World College (UWC) gathers different countries and cultures. I am deeply influenced by the idea of using education to integrate the differences between each other, and promoting the concept of making a peaceful world.

To this end, I decided to get the chance to enroll in school and feedback to Taiwanese society. After many written and oral exams, I was so lucky to be admitted to the USA campus at UWC. I will represent Taiwan to enter into UWC in New Mexico USA this summer, and complete the two-year International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and dedicate myself to the mission of making a peaceful world.

Naturally, I will make a short documentary and a journal to share with Taiwanese people during my study in UWC-USA, (There's a more detailed explanation being attached behind this article). Furthermore, working with my classmates to collect stories from different ethnic groups and cultures all around Taiwan will be my essential and crucial mission after returning back to Taiwan and making an online platform to show their stories and present in documentaries or Podcasts and articles in the future. It will also be extended to foreign countries to make the vision of two-way cultural exchanges.

United World College (UWC) was founded by a German educator, Kurt Hahn, after World War II. He wanted to resolve the conflicts and oppositions between different races. He tried to integrate different countries and societies around the world, and make a peaceful world through cultural exchanges, living and learning together, understanding, and empathizing with each other. UWC believes that education can definitely bring people from different backgrounds together, and let them take action, leading by themselves, and being just. Do their best to change society.

Now, UWC has 18 schools around the world, across four continents, and admitted teenagers from 16 to19 by the national committee. UWC takes the IB as the main course of study for two years, equivalent to Taiwanese grades 11 and 12 in high schools. Different from the Taiwanese education that is based on academic performance and entrance examination, IB pays more attention to the thinking process, experiential learning, community service, and outside activities.
UWC USA is located in New Mexico State, nearby the wilderness nature of northern New Mexico, and also within a historic area. The campus is centered on the famous Montezuma Castle. There are dormitories, classrooms, libraries, sports fields, offices, and restaurants...

<Community Service>  #

In the past, students and teachers in UWC-USA needed to go to Las Vegas and San Miguel County every year for more than 17,000 hours of community service — putting into practice the values fundamental to the UWC mission. Students had participated in campus services, worked with homeless people, and teenagers at the local state hospital. Service helped students establish relationships with locals, experience cultural diversity, and allowed students to establish connections with different backgrounds.

<Constructive conflict and communication>#

Constructive conflict and communication are achieved through a sense of responsibility, personal morality, and ethical leadership. UWC-USA is dedicated to making students have personal character, academic knowledge, ethical leadership, and communicating with each other. It also allows teachers to express their own opinions and provides students opportunities with peace, conflict resolution, setting their goals, and multicultural cooperation.

<Wilderness Program>  #

During orientation week, all new first-year students participate in a 3-day backpacking trip led by second-year Wilderness leaders. In their first semester, they participate in the Wilderness Program to learn about the campus trails. In October, during Southwest Studies, students have the opportunity to go on a backpacking expedition in the Grand Canyon for up to five days. Students can choose to continue participating in the wilderness project, explore and challenge by field activities, and explore the local environment to reflect on the value of UWC.

The American Southwest provides limitless hiking, camping, and outdoor activities. Almost half of all UWC-USA first-year students go on a Southwest Studies trip to the Grand Canyon in Northern Arizona or participate in longer excursions for training Wilderness leaders, rock climbing, and canoeing activities.

In the second semester, all students in the first grade can choose to participate in a backpacking trip to Arizona or choose to participate in wilderness leadership training and learn wilderness first aid. At the end of the school year, they will go on a 14-day backpacking trip in the forest to learn the skills for survival in the wild.

During these explorations, students will learn some skills, risk management, and navigation. The student will become a leader, learn better communication skills, and challenge self-consciousness. Finally, Wilderness Leadership Training will make students lead other students in the first grade to participate in the orientation exploration in August.

As a matter of fact, I have the confidence to prevail in all curriculums because my high school in Taiwan also has some courses something like this: Live with natural power and reflect on the value of life by external exploration. It also makes me feel very lucky that I was selected to study at the USA campus.

 〈United We Can〉  #

When I was in middle school, I realized that UWC can bring diverse ethnic groups together from all over the world and promote cultural exchange from the introduction of my senior sister in the school. I think most of the conflicts and wars in the world were caused by misunderstandings, ignorance, and strangeness between each other. They just lack a place and opportunities to hear and understand each other.

Should there’s a place like UWC to provide them opportunities for understanding each other, I believe it can reduce conflicts and promote peace. UWC allows me to interact with teenagers together worldwide and create more well-connections to cooperate with them, to serve, and to experience cultural diversity.

〈Connecting with society and find the value of myself〉#

In Taiwanese education, people often use grades on paper to define who they are.

Although I was in an experimental education school, we still use the standards of homework and the result of exams to give the score, but not the process of thinking. I don’t think the exams are good enough to test students' learning status, and facing the world in the future. The abilities to respond to occasions, self-reflection, and take actions are even more important in society.

In UWC, I can think outside of the limitation. I think the most important thing in UWC is to communicate with different cultures actively, trying to think and solve problems by discovering problems in the local environment, and taking them into action. I think It will be a very special experience to feel the world with my body and to memorize with labor. It’s more important and comprehensive than just using scores to evaluate a student.

Live with teenagers from different cultures and backgrounds together, It’s not just in the books, but so real. So I can make more friends from different backgrounds, different nationalities, and different perspectives after I experience the value of UWC by myself.

〈The reflections on Being a Cambodian International Volunteer〉  #

I’ve been an International Volunteer in Cambodia for 9 days with my classmates during the summer vacation. We saw how the Khmer Rouge made them worse. But what shocked me was that the locals are willing to forgive and believe that those histories are gone, and they are still hard working for life. In the night market, many kids that should have fun and enjoyed their childhood happily, do their best to attract customers to buy their products; Many victims who were hurt by the landmines during the Khmer Rouge, were still playing the musical instrument to show off their own value without giving up. At that moment, I ask myself whether I cherish and appreciate what I have, and also admire the faith and firmness of locals for the future. During nine days, we helped the locals build toilets, houses, farming, teaching health education in the elementary school, and even brought children to visit Angkor Wat. What surprised me was that although there are many children lived next to Angkor Wat, but they have never been there before, and maybe they have no chance to learn about the cultural heritage of their hometown in their life because they think attractions were just for tourists, so they are not qualified to visit, even though the locals in Cambodia is free to visit!

Although this trip seems to have improved the lives of some villages, I am still thinking, Is this help really what they need and want?

<Southeast Asia Cultural Service Team>  #

After returning to Taiwan from Cambodia, I had never forgotten the spirit that I saw in Cambodia and tried to use my power to change the society in Taiwan.

At first, I decided to join a special team in the school, “Southeast Asian Cultural Service Team”, to get closer to the migrant workers that were seldom seen in society. At first, we use the weekends to open a small bookstand to rent some Indonesian books for the migrant workers, to solve their homesickness. Later, we found that there is a language problem between migrant workers and Taiwanese. They were unable to express their own thoughts clearly, lost their rights, and even need to repatriate back to their hometown.

Therefore, we applied the funds from National Immigration Agency, and rent a place to teach Immigration and new residence Chinese. We use some units from the current events in Taiwan like the hot movie "Detention" and Winter Travel Allowance in Taiwan. We use some dialogues to help them facing the prejudice from Taiwanese. They also teach us Indonesian and Indonesian songs and dances, and we communicate in a two-way learning style. When I saw them laughing and sharing the songs and food from their hometown with us, they really touched me.

During the Winter Festival, I was invited to represent our team, and introduce them to the Ministry of Education, to show what we were doing in society. At the beginning of this year (2021), my classmates and I wrote a plan about migrant workers and participated  "New Century Youth Summit Forum" that was organized by a senior high school. We have been shortlisted in the finals, and we are looking forward to communicating and share our experiences with other schools. After that, we organized an activity that introduced “Batik” and Kartini Day in Indonesia to promote their culture. From planning to contacting the speakers, we learn a lot of experiences from it and also making more students learn about Indonesian culture.

〈Student Organization〉  #

According to the ideas from “Southeast Asia Cultural Service Team”, I want to make some changes for the rights of migrant workers, so I participated in a student organization last summer. The organization focused on the rights and interests of migrations and promotes the relationship between employees and workers. We try to improve the environment of migrant workers, creates a more diverse and friendly society, and awaken the teenagers’ consciousness in social justice. In the team, I am an article editor and the person who promote our essay and posts.

I use a lot of information from media, and the experiences from the “Southeast Asia Cultural Service Team”, to discover the problems from migrant workers. We speak for their rights by the current events. I felt the prejudice and unkindness from Taiwanese society again when I tried to speak for them. We had also been criticized and disapproved by society many times. I know, it is not easy to change this situation.

Someone asked me before, "You are just a high school student, what can you change by doing this?"

In fact, we can really make some changes...

<Write for Rights>  #

I still remembered when I was in junior high school, I participated in “Write for Rights” that organized by Amnesty International, to support the defenders of human rights who had been violated for they defend their own homeland and social justice. The real experience is that these small letters had improved their situation, and they had gotten support and encouragement. When I heard that these small powers can improve their lives, I was really excited, and I believe that our actions can change others' treatment. So I will keep working on defending the rights of migrants because we can make some changes too, not only by the elites in society. Although we are just students, we can stand for them and become the power. Even if we feel powerless about the lack of empathy and tolerance in society sometimes, but maybe our actions and changes do not only affect a group of people, but also make these people who are treated unequally feel our support.

2019

UWC USA (2021/9 - 2023 / 5)#

I plan to take English and American literature, Mathematics (HL), Economics, Spanish, Environmental science, etc. in the IB courses. I want to participate in the wilderness first aid course and experience the difference between the local and Taiwanese environments. I also want to work with students from different countries, to create a space, and make different voices and opinions be heard in UWC. During the winter vacation, I plan to live with local host families or other classmates, and participate in local activities and services to experience different cultures and festivals between the United States and Taiwan.

Many countries in the world know Taiwan because of its food, but it is hard to see the true value of Taiwan. Therefore, I’m also looking forward to sharing Taiwanese culture with other countries. I can share the value of democracy, special festivals, customs, and temple culture, etc., I hope I will change the Impressions in other countries with this kind of information.

<Contribution and Feedback>#

  1. After returning to Taiwan, I will set up an online platform to invite other students to travel around Taiwan with me to visit the stories of different ethnic groups, such as Indigenous people, migrant workers, Hakkas… and write some columns articles to put them on the online platform. I am interested in documentaries, so maybe I will also choose a few short stories, and make a documentary or some podcasts. So that people in Taiwan can hear the diverse voices in society and eliminate a few stereotypes from each other. In the future, it may be able to extend to other countries, inviting people from other countries to share their own short stories, and I will translate them into Chinese to make the vision of two-way cultural exchanges.
  2. After the classes in school, I plan to record the special experiences and feelings I experience at UWC every week, and it will become a little journal book at the end of the semester.  I will put the local information, daily activities, and the experience of communication between different ethnic groups to the book, so I can see the process and achievements of my study every semester. I can also use this journal to share the experience with multicultural exchanges when I come back to Taiwan, and let more people know about UWC.
  3. During the school days, I plan to make a short documentary to record daily life, local culture, conflicts, and Wilderness Program. I will go back to Taiwan to share these special experiences, so that the society won’t only focus on personal achievements, but also pay attention to the social issues and look forward to bringing a little bit of change to the Taiwanese social atmosphere.

After returning to Taiwan, I will share my study experience with different cultures abroad through documentaries and journals that I made while studying at UWC. I also want to learn from the students who graduated years ago, to organize sharing and forum activities, like Lead for Taiwan. On one hand, I will find my value in Taiwanese society, on the other hand, I can also contribute to UWC and all funders for their support.
Finally, I want to say that I don’t think there is a perfect school in the world. I know that being in UWC needs to face a lot of challenges and understand that I will definitely meet people with different values, but I believe that those are processes, like Carbon needs to be pressured and tempered to become a diamond. I believe that after two years, I will be more empathetic and tolerant, and be able to take the initiative to stand up, for those injustices, those things that I think are right.

In Conclusion

Thank you for reading this plan for your patience. I hope you can actively support and encourage young people in Taiwan to step out of their comfort zone and fight for their dreams. Even if you can't fund me, I hope you can help me to share and invite more people to help me complete this plan. Thanks again!
